I've been living in Austin for over 14 years, about 10 of which I've spent shopping regularly at Dragon's Lair. When I moved here and checked out the local comic shops, I was most impressed by DL, but ultimately chose another shop simply because it was more convenient to the university. After years of growing frustration, I finally corrected my mistake and switched to the Lair and have never regretted the move. Dragon's Lair is now in its 4th Austin location, and each move has improved the store. The current location is huge, with a lot of room to display their stock. I had never had any problems with being annoyed by gamers playing on the premises before, but now there is a separate room in the back of the store with tables for gamers. There's also plentiful room to move around and browse, or even to sit if you want. The number of comic titles carried is extensive--from mainstream titles to obscure independent titles that I've never seen elsewhere. And I've never had any problems special ordering a book that's still in print but not on the shelves. I wish they had a better supply of back issues, but I can understand that they choose not to specialize in that area. They do, however, have recent back issues of most titles available if you've missed an issue or want to start a new title and pick up recent issues. The staff is very friendly to both regulars and newcomers alike. I usually feel like I'm walking into "Cheers" there, since everyone knows my name. Different staff members are knowledgeable in the different areas of the store--comics, manga/anime, gaming--so there's usually someone around that can help in a particular area. I've never felt that the employees are any more geeky than those at any comic or gaming shop. I've had conversations about a number of other topics there--politics, music, movies, etc. Overall, I highly recommend the store. As I said above, it's not the place to go if you're looking for older back issues. But if you're looking for new comics or recent issues, graphic novels, manga, gaming books or supplies, or anime or SF/F DVDs, it's a great place to shop.
