Instant Messaging server: Owner/Employee Info/Comments: A great independent used and new bookstore in the suburbs? Impossible, you say. But it's not, and Powell's Books in Beaverton has proven you don't have to erect a cookie-cutter, Big Box store in order to sell books outside the city limits. Opened in 1984, Powell's Books in Beaverton is a large, easily accessible bookstore filled floor to ceiling with books. Used, new, rare, and hard-to-find titles combine for an extremely varied inventory that changes and grows daily. Reflecting Beaverton's high-tech atmosphere (Tektronix, Intel, Mentor Graphics, and Nike are neighbors), Powell's Books in Beaverton offers an extensive technical books selection ranging from the newest releases to the obscure. Meanwhile, the Children's Section is practically a store unto itself. It occupies its own wing and features an entire room devoted entirely to picture books. Literature, Art, Graphic Novels, Metaphysics, Mysteries, Sci-fi, Western Americana, and Pacific Northwest regional titles all boast outstanding sections. The store also offers one of the most extensive and thorough selections on Railroading in North America. "I think we take the best elements of all the Powell's stores and roll them into one," says store manager Paul Smailes. "We have the big store feel of the City of Books, a very large technical book selection, and the largest Children's book section of any of our stores." The funky atmosphere of a Powell's Bookstore, a knowledgeable book-loving staff, and the Angel's Cafe complete this biblio Paradise in Portland's western suburbs. Store Review: |
