Store Review:
PLEASE NOTE: The views expressed here are not those of THE MASTER LIST, but rather, those of people who have visited the store listed above. Please take all opinions expressed here at the value of what they are: opinions.

  1. The owners of Lambiek are some of the friendliest and most knowledgable comics store people I've ever met. After 35 years in the business, they know the scene equally will with a "cs" or with an "x". Here's just one example of the good-hearted and extraordinary efforts they've gone to in promoting our medium. Will Eisner created his famous graphic novel "A Contract with God." Lambiek decided that this story about orthodox Jews should be available in the language of its characters - Yiddish. So though there was no market demand for it, they took it upon themselves to translate and print the story that way. Eisner was overjoyed. There were almost no buyers for this specialty edition, but as the folks at Lambiek put it, "this was one way we could thank Will Eisner for his comics." The latest news is that Lambiek has to make a year's worth of rennovations on their historic building in Amsterdam (it should be noted that most buildings in the city center as historic), so they've moved down the street to #119. They have less space, but their full catalogue is available online. After the rigors of the move, they're considering becoming totally virtual. Don't let 'em do it! Go see them if you're in Amsterdam and help keep this unique store open for another 35 years.

  2. This store has a large selection of Dutch, French and English comics (US + UK). When it comes to US comics they seem to specialize mostly in underground or ground level comics (ie they have Hate, Naughty Bits, Bone and the Vertigo titles but I don't remember if they have Batman/Superman/X-men/etc). They have a large selection of mainstream European GNs (example: Tintin, Asterix). They have a better choice of newspaper strip collections (Garfield, Calvin & Hobbes, etc) than the big chain stores here in Montreal. Basically they seem to want to carry just about everything that has anything to do with comics. Golden/Silver Age books are not US books but European hardcover GNs (mostly in Dutch). They propably accept other credit cards but Visa is the one I have and thus the only one I have used there. Staff is very helpful and all the ones I have dealt with are fluent in English.
